Winter Care for Lithium Forklifts in Cold Weather

As winter settles in, regions experiencing freezing temperatures and snowfall face unique challenges in maintaining forklift performance. For areas already in the grip of winter, such as northern and mountainous regions, taking extra care of your lithium forklift battery is crucial to ensure longevity and optimal performance.

Here’s how to protect your battery and forklift:

  • Keep Batteries Charged: Cold weather reduces battery capacity. Charge the forklift immediately after use, especially in temperatures below freezing. Always maintain at least 30% charge in sub-zero conditions.
  • Avoid Long-Term Low Charge: If your forklift is idle for a while, ensure the battery is fully charged. Charge it at least once a month and store in a dry, cool environment (5°C to 30°C).
  • Preheat Before Charging: Charging below 0°C can be difficult. Use a heating function if available, or let the forklift run or warm up the battery to above freezing before charging.
  • Defrost and Charge: If the battery is frozen, move the forklift to a warmer space and begin charging with low current. Once the temperature rises, switch to regular charging.
  • Avoid Over-Discharge & Over-Charge: Cold weather can lead to battery damage from over-discharge or over-charge. Follow a “shallow charge” routine to extend battery life.

By following these winter-specific guidelines, you’ll ensure that your lithium forklift remains reliable and efficient, even in the harshest of winter conditions. With freezing temperatures already setting in, now is the time to focus on battery care and maintenance to keep your operations running smoothly.
